About PMP® Exam

Out of the 200 questions, 25 questions are pretest questions. These 25 pretest questions are randomly placed throughout the examination to gather statistical information on the performance of these pretest questions. To pass the PMP® exam, out of the 175 questions, candidates must correctly answer a minimum of 141 questions.

Eligibility criteria for taking the PMP® exam

Category 1

Candidates hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and have at least 4,500 hours of project management experience within the five process groups. These candidates must also have at least 35 contact hours of project management education (35 PDUs).

Category 2 

Candidates possess a high school diploma but no other higher-level education degree. They must have accumulated at least 7,500 hours of project management experience within the five process groups and have completed at least 35 contact hours / PDUs of additional educational training.

Re-Examination Information

Candidates who do not pass the PMP® examination must complete a Re-Examination Form. The re-examination fee is $275 for Computer Based and $150 for Paper based exam. Forms should be returned via fax or postal mail to PMI or the appropriate Service Centre:

The Re-Examination Form may be used for one year from the date of the last examination. Once the re-examination fee is processed, a new eligibility letter containing detailed scheduling information will be sent to your email address. Candidates who apply for re-examination will receive the balance of the time remaining in their eligibility period and not another full year.

PMI PMBOK®, 5th Edition

PMI released the new 5th Edition of PMBOK (the Project Management Body of Knowledge®) on January, 2013. The new PMI certifications (PMP, PgMP and CAPM) will now be based on the 5th Edition after July 31, 2013. The new edition tries to bring 1) more harmonization with other relevant PMI standards such as Program Management, Portfolio Management and Scheduling 2) ensures consistency with ISO 21500 and RDS. The other notable changes are:

  • Expands to cover 47 processes from 42, and to cover 10 Knowledge Areas from 9. 32 of the 4th Edition’s 42 processes had some changes
  • Project Communications Management is split into two knowledge areas
  • A new section 3 is added to put more emphasis is placed on relationship of Project Management to Program Management, Portfolio Management, and Organizational Management
  • The terms “Work Performance Data”, “Work Performance Information”, and “Work Performance Reports” were aligned with the DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom) model used in Knowledge Management
  • Changes to Planning Processes: 4 processes added (Plan Scope Management, Plan Schedule Management, Plan Cost Management, Plan Stakeholder Management)
  • Changes to Controlling Processes: 2 processes added (Control Communications, Control Stakeholder Engagement)
  • Changes to Communications Processes: 2 processes merged into one (Distribute Information and Report Performance to Manage Communications)
  • Two processes reallocated from Communications Management to Stakeholder Management
  • Verify Scope is changed to Validate Scope
  • Administer Procurement is changed to Control Procurement
  • Direct and Manage Project Execution is changed to Direct and Manage Project Work
